PATHWAY  TO  UNDERSTANDING
– Autumn 2007

In Portland Church Halls, Troon
10.30 a.m. - 4.30 p.m.
(registration 9.45 a.m.) - details to follow.

The first of these events was held last year on Saturday October 22nd in Portland Church Halls, Troon, and was voted a great success by all who came.

Today new and difficult decisions often need to be made as medical science pushes new frontiers, and social behaviour challenges traditional boundaries. Recently issues including helping a terminally ill relative to travel abroad for euthanasia, risking the death of one Siamese twin to allow the other the possibility of life, creating a sibling in order to save the life of a child have all been headline news. And Christians have been asked to make their views known. Unfortunately few of us have seriously thought through such issues and have therefore remained silent.

Pathway to Understanding provided a rare opportunity to hear experts on these subjects and to discuss the issues. We are indebted to the marvellous input from our leaders, and to the open sharing of all who participated, together creating a day which has enriched us all.

We are hoping to follow this in Autumn 2007 with a day looking in depth at our differences and common ground with those of different faiths. If you know of leaders of other faiths who we could contact to lead this vent please let us know.

Below are details of the leaders who came to the 2005 event:-

Julie Clague has vast experience teaching and guiding students of through the moral maze of modern living. She will introduce us to the different ethical systems available to us. We will then explore three topics in small groups facilitated by our three leaders. She will produce a paper nearer the time that will be available on this site offering background information on making ethical decisions. We strongly recommend you read this before the day.

Alison Elliot and her husband, Jo, have a daughter and son.

Dr Elliot is convener of the Scottish Churches Forum since 2002 and was convener of the Commission on Justice, Peace, Social and Moral Issues from 1999 to 2002. She is a member of the Central Committee of the Conference of European Churches and a member of the World Council of Churches' Churches Commission on International Affairs. Dr Elliot holds several civic appointments - member of Council of the Scottish Civic Forum since 2000; chairwoman of the Lay Advisory Group of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh; member of the Scottish Executive Department of Health's National Advisory Group for Improving Mental Health and Wellbeing and, for two years, (1999 to 2001), chair of the Scottish Land Reform Convention. A regular broadcaster and author - her most recent publication, Frontier Spirit, was published by Scottish Christian Press in January 2004 - Dr Elliot was awarded the OBE earlier in 2003 for services to the Church of Scotland and ecumenical relations.

Fr. Stephen Motroni gained his Masters degree evaluating retreat work and spiritual development with teenagers. For some years he was director of Dehon House working with senior pupils in Cheshire, leading discussions and helping the young people to explore many ethical issues.
